These settings could be academic community health centers that integrate and instill the value of extensive community service, within the spheres of health profession education and community derived and directed research. Health education research and training in health profession education is the most visible within dedicated hospital settings that are extensively supervised by trained professionals whose hands on experiences are primarily based in academically targeted medical centers that are designed to cater to the specific requirements of the relatively homogeneous populations. The need for 'health training': Interdisciplinary training of health profession students at a number of community health centers help students to avail of the opportunity to be exposed to the real working arena, with diverse urban communities. This helps the dedicated ones to develop community assessment skills and deeply appreciate the various issues pertaining to culture and understand the essential and very much related public health issues. Health education research helps to identify students and faculty for extensive training within the sphere of influence of the various health professions and ensure that the students thus identified are provided with hands on experiences that in turn promote cultural competency. The issue of cultural competency relates to both, within the communities they specifically serve and also by faculty who are trained and experienced in teaching culturally competent curriculum. The health education research helps students and the concerned faculty and administrative staff of the various colleges and universities to identify the available curriculum in health professions. It is observed that most of the universities and colleges are lacking in the inclusion of correct and approved content that is inclusive of the various issues pertaining to diversity, cultural competency, and responsiveness to broader community health needs. Health education exposure: Generally, it is observed that nowadays, the faculty members at most universities are no longer practitioners of community based health care. On account of extensive health education research it has been observed that their expertise is based primarily on theory rather than practice. It is not denied that theory is indeed essential in establishing a base for practice, but complimenting exposure of health profession students must also be taken care of and conducted within communities where they will be able to apply theory in practice and ultimately become more sensitive to the issues at hand. The recent developments within the sphere of influence of health education research have shown that the students are adept in providing the required services and treatment for the populations served. They are also proficient in providing appropriate services and treatment to the populations they reach out to. Community and university partnerships are very essential for educating the health profession workforce of the future. |
